Choosing the Correct USB-C Cable For Your Wall Plate

Tech Tip: Choosing the Correct USB-C Cable For Your Wall Plate

USB-C is the solution to orientation-based USB that has taken the world by storm. This connection type has become a common solution for charging and video transmission, becoming a new standard for next generation classrooms. But are all USB cables built the same?

The short answer is....... no.

USB 3.0 introduced us to transmission speeds up to 5Gbps capable of 1080p60Hz. As USB evolved into USB 3.1 and continues to evolve into USB 3.2, transmission speeds continue to increase, with previous standards being absorbed into the current:
Specification
Previous Term
Current Technical Term
Transition Speed
USB 3.0
USB 3.1 Gen 2
USB 3.1 Gen 2
5Gbps (1080p 60Hz)
USB 3.1
USB 3.1 Gen 2
USB 3.2 Gen 2
10Gbps (4k 30Hz)
USB 3.2
N/A
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2
20Gbps (4k 60Hz)

To achieve the best performance using AVPro Edge’s USBC Wall Plate, a USB-C cable capable of 10Gbps must be used (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is currently unsupported).

When looking for a proper cable, make sure it is labeled accordingly. A good cable should feature labels containing:
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2
  • SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps
  • 10 Gbps
Finding cables with these labels helps prevent buying power only cables (unable to transmit video) or cables unable to transmit above 5Gbps.
